Ep 13: Meta Compute and the Next AI Startup Bets

Meta spent so much on AI infrastructure that it may have backed into becoming a cloud company.

On July 1, Reuters reported that Meta is building a cloud business to sell excess AI compute, based on Bloomberg reporting. That is the cold open for Episode 13: is this the smartest way to fund the AI race, or the clearest sign that nobody knows how to price the compute bill?

Signal or Noise

  1. Meta Compute - SIGNAL. If Meta sells model hosting or raw compute, the AI race turns back into cloud economics.
  2. OpenAI's 5% equity proposal - SIGNAL. Frontier AI companies are starting to look like national infrastructure, not normal startups.
  3. Claude Sonnet 5 - NOISE. Cheaper sustained agent execution matters only if it changes what builders actually ship.
  4. Together AI's $800M Series C - SIGNAL. Production AI costs are now a board-level problem.
  5. Claude Science - SIGNAL. The next AI product wave may be job-specific workbenches, not generic assistants.

Ship It or Skip It

  • Meta Compute broker for AI teams. Compare and route workloads across Meta, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, CoreWeave, Nebius, and Together AI.
  • Back-office agent for small professional-services firms. Start with law and accounting offices that need intake, review packets, billing notes, and deadline tracking.

Hot takes

  • Oscar: The model race is becoming an infrastructure race again.
  • Matt: Most AI workbench products are selling relief from tool chaos.

Like how we think about AI?

Human In the Loop is me and Matt thinking out loud. Putting that thinking to work inside a real company is the day job. If you're a founder or team trying to ship AI that survives production, let's talk.
